Retirement FAQ: Do Married Couples See Eye-to-Eye on Retirement Plans?Retirement can be a stressful time for many people. Most of the time, it means leaving your current job, slowing down and reevaluating your priorities as new challenges and opportunities arise. For a married couple it may be even more stressful because they have to contend with two perspectives on retirement and, sometimes, these may clash.It’s not something I’ve thought of in-depth before but an article on Market Watch, “U.S. Faces a Married Couples’ Retirement Crisis“, does a great job of explaining the potential factors that can lead to a marriage crisis during retirement.A study, conducted by the Fidelity Investment Couples Retirement Study, states that 38% of couples disagree about the lifestyle they want during retirement. Not only is this the biggest hurdle but it will determine what plans couples make during retirement, especially if both want to continue working, or one does and the other doesn’t.  This real estate company offers the suggestion that to buy a second home now and make it your retirement dream home,” getting tax advantages and a vacation spot in the meantime.In addition, many couples don’t agree where they want to live during retirement (at least 36%). Moving is stressful, we’ve all had to do it at some point in our lives, but during retirement it might be even more so, again, especially if your spouse has a different idea of what they want their retirement to be. If living close to family, and nourishing the relationships you’ve built during your working years is what you want during retirement, moving is not for you. If your spouse has to move though, and explore new horizons, this may be another hurdle to overcome before any plans can be made.Lastly, 32% of couples don’t see eye to eye on working during retirement. While this is becoming the norm, couples may be looking for other ways to keep their minds occupied without actually working. Times are changing, and while retirement may soon be considered the next stage in life, as opposed to the end of a journey, ideas will vary about retirement can, and should, be spent.It’s important to consider your spouse’s plans during retirement, as well as your own, and work together to achieve a more cohesive and inclusive plan. Retirement means different things to different people. Frankly, for me, retirement is not about sitting on a beach and sipping Pina Coladas.
