I’m always driving.Even if I wasn’t a reverse mortgage broker, I’d still be driving because I live in Miami.Could I survive without driving?
Probably.Do I want to?
Not really.I dread not having the ability to go somewhere when I want to. It’s frustrating, infuriating and inconvenient. Not to mention, relying on someone to chauffeur you around. That’s just horrible for all those involved. So when I read that
fewer teens are obtaining driver’s licenses I couldn’t help but stop and wonder:
What’s going on? Driving used to mean freedom, a touch of rebellion, and one of the signs of upcoming adulthood. Your parents drove you around, now, as a young man or woman, you would take on that responsibility. It was the beginning of you being responsible for someone other than yourself (unless you had a younger sibling). So what’s causing this trend?
Well, gas. It’s strange to see how one thing could affect a whole age group because we see gas as important, but not
THAT important.
Except it is. In our business, gas is one of the most important tools in our arsenal. It gives us the freedom to make ourselves available to clients at a moment’s notice, it drives us from house to house and it helps us scope out properties. So can paying for gas be that much of a hassle that fewer teenagers are getting their driver’s license?Well, gas and
car insurance. It’s one of those necessities that can be avoided if you don’t drive. No driving means you can’t go out and if you can’t go out then you can’t spend money and if you can’t spend money then there’s no need to get a job that will help pay for your expenses.
Seems like a win-win, right? Especially considering that teenagers 16 to 19 are
three times more likely to be involved in a deadly crash than 20 year old’s. Therefore, the less kids drive, the less they go out and the more time they spend inside or in front of their computers and smart phones.
But wait…How is that a good thing?Don’t get me wrong. I think social media is great, especially now that more seniors are going online, but personal connections need to be built and those only happen in person. It’s fine to talk to someone online but that’s too easy.
I thrive on making personal connections to clients. Most brokers do; a flesh and blood person you can trust, a computer is a little more difficult. When machines replace every aspect of our lives let me know. For now though, it’s time to get out of the house and build connections.
